Some people might disagree that emotional intelligence is important for a leader to have. In fact, it was popularized in 2002 with Daniel Goleman’s book “Emotional Intelligence,” which took off as a cultural phenomenon. However, John Mayer and Peter Salovey, the psychologists who developed the theory of emotional intelligence back in the 1990s, had been talking about it since at least 1989 when they first published an article about it.

I think that emotional intelligence is extremely important for leaders since it allows them to understand their followers better and in turn have an easier time leading them in a specific direction. It also gives the leader more of an idea of what they are capable of doing before involving others, so there is less risk involved in trying something new or innovative.
Another example would be how Steve Jobs used his understanding of technology when launching products like Apple’s iPod, iPhone, iTunes Store, etc. He was able to use this knowledge to his advantage in every case because he knew exactly what people were interested in based on market research. Without an understanding of these products’ technical specs or ability to at high speeds, it would have been difficult for him to have been as successful as he was explains Fred Auzenne.
I think the most important skill for a leader to have is courage. A good leader needs to be brave enough to make tough decisions on our behalf and not follow the path of least resistance (i.e., staying quiet). Leaders need to take risks and do what is right, even if it may inconvenience us at times. They can acquire this skill by practicing self-discipline and making sure they are doing the best they can to meet their goals. Making time for mindfulness and meditation each day can help anyone stay disciplined. And focused on building these types of habits that might otherwise seem difficult or complicated.

There wasn’t necessarily one specific moment that I knew I was destined to lead. It was more of a gradual realization that came over time. As I grew more confident in my abilities and convictions. What inspired me the most were the successes of those around me. Seeing people I looked up to achieve great things made me believe. That anything was possible if I worked hard enough for it. And, most importantly, I never lost sight of the fact that leadership is not about being perfect. It’s about making mistakes, learning from them, and moving forward.
